The Legacy of Ken Selby and Mazzio’s Pizza
In 1961, while teaching school by day, Ken Selby opened a tiny one-man pizza shop in Tulsa, Oklahoma, called The Pizza Parlor. For many Tulsans, it was their first-ever taste of pizza—crafted entirely by Selby himself after school hours.
By 1965, with growing demand, Selby left teaching to focus on pizza full-time, opened a second location, and rebranded as Ken’s Pizza. The name and his signature thin crust and special sauce caught fire, and by 1975, the brand had expanded to over 100 locations across and beyond Oklahoma.
In the late 1970s, Selby envisioned a more expansive concept—bigger dining rooms, a broader menu, thicker pizzas, sub sandwiches, and an abundant salad bar. This vision became Mazzio’s Pizza, launched in 1979. It was an instant success. Within a decade, the chain had grown to more than 150 stores in 12 states.
Mazzio’s innovation has continued ever since, introducing new items like the Calzone Ring®, Pepperollies®, Family Bakes, and more. A system-wide remodel brought a fresh, modern look, and with it, the name evolved to Mazzio’s Pizza to better reflect the full experience.
From a one-man shop to a regional brand with over 140 locations, the Mazzio’s story is built on bold ideas, continuous reinvention, and the belief that the future is written by those who learn from their past.
